I was a patient about 7 years ago of Dr John Carbone, an excellent surgeon of Harbor Hospital Baltimore. I had a standard procedure of 2 lower disc fusions. The operation was a total success and was still in good structure. The pain from the operation and slow recovery time were excruciating for me. I swore that I would never have a back operation again.  As years passed, I often forgot about the operation and viewed it as a complete success.

A few years ago, I fell from a ladder and twisted my mid torso as I landed hard on the floor. Although the first operation was a success, the twisting in my fall compromised the top screws to the original repair and added additional damage to my spine. I put off the inevitable operation while being treated with therapy, rest, and shots. Although bearable for awhile,  I soon found that an additional operation was needed.

I was referred to Dr Winters and his group of orthopedists from another orthopedic clinic. I had also been told of Dr Winters' expertise from friends and advertising describing his microscopic minimally invasive laser surgery with little pain and fast recovery time. Upon discussion of low back pain and quick recovery procedures with Dr Winters, I decided to have my back operation here in Frederick rather than going to Baltimore. Although my prior Doctor is an excellent surgeon, at the time Dr Winters was the only Doctor in the area using the laser technique.  My choice of Dr Winters was not only sensible, but proved wise for my situation.

My lower back needed replacement of the existing upper screws in addition
to the damaged adjoining upper 2 discs. Although Dr Winters told me that he adjusted his approach to the procedure somewhat, I immediately felt very little pain in recovery. The recovering time was so short that I was back to work within 1 week! I needed to be mindful and take it easy as I had just experienced a major operation and needed to be cautious. This “never operation again” in all respects was a complete success.

It is essentially hard to compare 2 very respected surgeons, but the procedures can be compared. Dr Winters  expertise and his minimally invasive technique is the best.  I am very pleased and thank Dr Winters for his proficiency.

Very Sincerely,

Brenda Starkey Walkersville, MD
